FORGED FROM CENTURIES OF PASSION

Located on a parcel of land situated along the mighty Fox River, The Woodlands at Canterfield calls the charming village of West Dundee its home. Generations of families have tended and cared for this land, and The “Woodlands” is named as a homage to the surrounding wooded areas of the past and present. Oak, walnut and hazelnut trees flourish here and are still very much part of the landscape and the many forest preserves peppered throughout the area.

West Dundee

ITS PAST SHAPES US

As far back as 12,000 years, nomadic populations roamed these lands, followed by tribes of Indigenous Peoples living off the land; this area has always had a connection to the Fox River. History recounts that Indigenous Peoples and early settlers lived off of its waters for food, healing powers and replenishment, as well as traversing its mighty waters for travel and trade routes.

In 1835, Captain Thomas H. Thompson, Kane County Commissioner and the County’s first Supervisor, first occupied the land. It then led to ownership by John F. Jelke, owner of the nationally-recognized Jelke Good Luck Margarine Company, followed by the Mutual Life Company, building the Yeoman City of Childhood orphanage school, which was built on the northern portion of the property.

Finally, Edmund H. Haeger and Joseph F. Estes, of the world-renowned Haeger Potteries, purchased the property and Barbara Estes, the wife of Joseph Estes, named it Canterfield Farm. The property has remained in the Haeger-Estes family ever since.

ITS PRESENT INSPIRES US

The land, as we know it today, now features equestrian and pedestrian trails at the river’s edge, with stunning views from the bluff area and easy access to the Prairie Path Trail System, via bridges south and north of the property. Over the years, meticulous effort, time, and passion have gone into maintaining the land, including agreements with the Forest Preserve District for trail access and natural area restoration and preservation of wetlands. The Haeger-Estes’ vision for the land was, and still is, to create a sense of community, environmental harmony, and architectural style while refining the historical significance of the property.
